Why attention is your superpower šŸ’„

Plus: Lazy analysts will love this Excel tip

Hey hey! Hereā€™s a wild story to spice up your Thursday: Williams Racing was reportedly using a 20,000-part Excel spreadsheet to piece together its racing cars.

Apparently, the monster of a spreadsheet was ā€œimpossible to navigate and impossible to update,ā€ causing the company to lose its status and fall on hard times.Ā

BRB, adding this story to my list of why you should become proficient in Excel. šŸ˜…

Pivot Table Hack For The Lazy AnalystsĀ

Do you self-identify as a lazy analyst? Donā€™t worry, I wonā€™t tell your boss. šŸ˜‰ But I will tell you about the Recommended Pivot Tables featureā€”which just might become your Excel BFF.

POV: Youā€™re just discovered the Recommended Pivot Tables feature šŸ‘€

This tool analyzes your data and suggests several pivot table layouts that might be useful.Ā

Letā€™s walk through an example, starting with a basic spreadsheet of expenses:Ā

Not bad, butā€¦there are simpler ways to view this data. Luckily, Recommended Pivot Tables will tell us exactly what those are. Hereā€™s how:Ā

Step 1) Highlight your data setĀ

Step 2) Go to Insert and select Recommended Pivot TablesĀ

Step 3) Scroll through and select the Pivot Table that suits you best!Ā

Step 4) Select OK and youā€™re all set!

šŸ’” Pro Tip: After selecting a recommended Pivot Table, you can still customize it! Use this tool as a base to save you time (and headaches) before adjusting it to fit your needs.

Attention = Opportunities

Letā€™s play a game: Find everything thatā€™s red in this image.Ā šŸ”Ž

You probably noticed the red notebook, candy, and pushpin. Great job! Butā€¦can you recall everything blue?Ā

Way harder, right? Thatā€™s because you channeled your focus on what was red and ignored everything else. This is exactly what happens when you miss out on opportunities because youā€™re focused on something else.Ā

For example: Youā€™re having a hard time at your job, so you funnel your attention into finding a new job. You would:

  • āžœ Notice the job listings on your local coffee shopā€™s bulletin board.Ā

  • āžœ Find and message recruiters that arenā€™t in your exact niche, because you never know who they could connect you with.Ā

  • āžœ See a LinkedIn post of a friend switching jobs as an opportunity to get a foot in the door at a new company.Ā

But someone who only pours their attention into hating their current job? They miss out on all of these opportunitiesā€”not because they arenā€™t there, but because they canā€™t even see them in the first place. Theyā€™re so focused on finding the red, they miss all the blue.Ā

This is why where you place your attention is so important.Ā

To be clear, the law of attraction isnā€™tĀ an oversimplified belief that ā€œpositive thoughts always lead to positive outcomesā€ (reaching your goals is h-a-r-d). Instead, itā€™s about adjusting your focus to spot opportunities where other people miss them.Ā

Because oftentimes, theyā€™re right in front of you: You just have to be willing to notice. šŸ”Ž
