Plus: The Excel chart tip I swear by

Hey! To the thousands of people who joined our free live beginners Excel class last week: Thank you!

I had such a blast covering the basics with you and can’t wait to see how your new skills change the way you work (and let you swerve those #REF! errors now and forever. Phew. đŸ€).

Missed class? Don’t worry—I’ve got something special coming this December. Stay tuned!

P.S. We’ll be off next Thursday to celebrate Thanksgiving. Enjoy the holiday, and we’ll see you back here the following week.

The Excel Chart I Can’t Live Without 📊

Let’s go over this data. It’s not bad, but
what if we could give it a little flair? Something so it’s not only easier for you to read, but also for your boss (who is definitely going to be reading it later).

Luckily, a simple Excel tip—one of my all-time favorites—instantly gives your data that ✹ je-ne-sais quoi ✹ with crystal clear visuals. The secret? Use sparklines to add mini, easy-to-read charts into your cells.

Here’s how you do it in just 30 seconds:

Step 1) Select your desired cell

Step 2) Press Alt + N + S + L (this is the shortcut for inserting a line chart into your spreadsheet)

Step 3) Select the data (B2:H2) and press Enter

Step 4) Go to Sparklines > Column

Step 5) Drag down to copy for remaining cells

Step 6) Highlight the entire row for each row with a bar chart. Drag down to increase the height of each highlighted row.

That’s it!

Stressed About Post-Thanksgiving Inbox Chaos? 🩃

Time off for the holidays is great—until you return to a mountain of emails and a huge to-do list. 🙃

The good news? It doesn’t have to be this way. With the right Outlook setup, your emails (and calendar!) can practically organize themselves.

That’s where my Outlook Mini-Course comes in! Through actionable lessons (as Austin will tell you âŹ‡ïž) you’ll learn how to clear the clutter so you never get post-vacation email anxiety again:

What a Private Chef Can Teach Us About Manifestation 🧑‍🍳

In 2023, Rob Li exploded on TikTok with “Day in the Life” videos that showed his dishes as a private chef for billionaires in the Hamptons (he now has 1.1 million followers!).

Except Rob wasn’t actually a private chef for billionaires
at least not yet. He allegedly rented lavish Airbnbs to stage his cooking content and attract his dream clients.

And it worked

Today, Rob has his dream job as a private chef for luxury clients. He knew he had the talent—all he was missing was an opportunity. But instead of waiting for one? He created his own.

Rob’s story teaches us an important lesson, even if your goal isn’t to chef up risotto for billionaires: There’s power in 1) declaring what you want and 2) stepping into that role before you’ve officially arrived.

Say your dream is to be a data strategist for an AI startup. Maybe you:

  • Update your LinkedIn header to “Aspiring Data Strategist”

  • Enroll in Excel courses to master dynamic dashboards

  • Share your spreadsheets online and explain how you use Excel to uncover and predict trends in AI

Before long, people start associating you as an AI data strategist—even before an AI startup hires you!

Of course, the foundation of this strategy is developing your skills as you market yourself (or else your first day on the job might be
awkward). But the principle holds—and as Milton Berle said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” đŸšȘ

Thanks for reading! In honor of Excel’s 40th birthday, there was an online callout asking how people have used it over the years—and the responses did not disappoint. Here are a few:

  • Planning a newborn’s feeding schedule

  • Organizing a wedding to accommodate 250 guests

  • Tracking the financial costs of a long-distance relationship

Who said Excel was only for the office? 😅

Stay Exceling,
