The Secret to Stop Selling Yourself Short šŸ¤«

ā€œI paid $200,000 to learn this in my Wharton MBA, but Iā€™ll teach you for free.ā€

This ā¤“ is how Wharton graduate and creator Hannah starts her thumb-stopping Instagram Reel

Hannahā€™s answer? Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA). If you havenā€™t heard of BATNA, itā€™s your safety net in any negotiation that prevents you from settling for less.

Defining your BATNA is essential to negotiating confidently and clinching the best outcome. And if youā€™re thinking, ā€œBut Iā€™m not in business school šŸ¤·ā€ remember (almost) everything in life involves negotiation.

So how does having a BATNA change things? Letā€™s see it in action:

  • šŸ’¼ Job offer āžœ Letā€™s say youā€™re negotiating a job offer but the salary is below your expectations. If your BATNA is staying in your current role, having more interviews lined up, or freelance projects, you can hold out for an offer that matches your worth.

  • šŸ  Apartment hunting āžœ Imagine negotiating rent on a new apartment but the landlord wonā€™t lower the price. With a BATNAā€”such as other apartment options, renewing your current lease, or finding a roommateā€”you avoid settling for an unaffordable deal.

There are a ton of ways to build your BATNA. It could be saving money for financial independence, cultivating self-confidence, and learning in-demand skills (by going to our free Excel class!) to gain leverage in job negotiations.

In every situation, your BATNA gives you the power to walk away from anything that doesnā€™t meet your standards. Or as Hannah eloquently puts: ā€œA strong BATNA gives you the power to ask for what youā€™re worth.ā€

Thanks for being here! Last week, Mike and I got our Christmas tree and set it up .2 seconds later. šŸ¤£šŸŽ„ (I was way too excited).
