The Excel Shortcut All Beginners Should Know 💁‍♀️

Imagine you’re handling sales data and want to tag profits as above or under $3,000. ⤵

Are you going to…

  1. Tediously type each answer in every cell?

  2. Save your time with a handy Excel shortcut?

Since you’re here, I’m guessing you’re all about option two. 😉 So let’s dive into the IF Function—one of the first tools I recommend Excel beginners learn.

Why? Because it introduces the concept of conditional logic—a fancy way of saying, “Make Excel do something only if a certain condition is met.”

This “If this, then that” approach is everywhere in Excel, from sorting to analyzing. Once you grasp the IF function, other Excel tools will easily click for you.

Here it is in action: 🏃

Step 1) In the desired cell, type =IF(C2>3000, “Yes”, “No”)

Here’s a close-up of exactly how that formula works: 🔍

Step 2) Hit enter and drag down. That’s it!

The IF function is just the beginning—there are four more essential Excel functions every beginner should know. Curious to know what they are? Find them here!

The Power of The Micro Yes 🙇‍♀️

“I’ll apply for that job…tomorrow.” “I’ll start writing my book…this weekend.” “I’ll launch my business…next year.”

If these thoughts ⤴ sound familiar,  you’re not alone. Being as busy as we are, it’s normal for us to push our goals to a distant ‘someday’—a magical (but unknown 🤷) future when life finally slows down.

I used to see this as ‘procrastination.’ But I’ve since learned that this tendency is actually our body’s way of conserving energy. That’s because our brains aren’t wired for productivity but for life preservation.

So when we’re feeling overwhelmed? Our brain delays tasks to protect our limited resources. The question is: How do we curb this instinct to make progress on our goals? 💭

Enter: The “micro yes.” Coined by neuropsychotherapist Britt Frank, a micro yes is “the smallest possible thing you can say ‘yes’ to without triggering your nervous system’s survival responses.” For example:

  • “I’ll apply for that job tomorrow.” ➜ “I’ll upload my rĂŠsumĂŠ today.”

  • “I’ll start writing my book this weekend.” ➜ “I’m going to write one sentence today.”

These micro yeses seem puny, but they pack a punch for two reasons: 1) They bring you closer to your goals without setting off that survival instinct and 2) they reduce cognitive dissonance—a major productivity killer—by helping you keep your promises.

The next time you’re tempted to put off your goal to some faraway future, try doing one micro yes today instead. While tiny, I promise they add up to something huge. 💫

Thanks for being here! After months on the road, it feels amazing to be back in my office in Sedona. Being home has done wonders for my productivity—creating the lessons for our upcoming free live Excel class just ✨ flowed. ✨

Speaking of which, don’t forget to save your spot before it’s too late!
