Plus: Count countless sheets

Hey! Let’s play a game. Below are three Excel errors that caused real-world chaos—except one never happened. Can you guess which? 🤔

  • A miscalculation in J.P. Morgan’s model cost the bank $6 billion

  • A spreadsheet slip led Austria to announce the wrong election results

  • A university admissions office sent acceptance letters to 2,000 rejected applicants after a sorting snafu

Just another reminder that the world really does run on Excel. 😅 Keep reading to learn which is a fake-out!

Count Countless Sheets 🔢

“This thing has gotten completely out of control.”

It’s a Monday morning when your boss appears at your desk. Laptop in hand, they start scrolling through all the sheets in the company’s workbook.

“How many sheets are even in here?!” they say. “Do you think you could get me a count within the next hour?”

Challenge accepted. Sure, you could manually count and click through each tab (hello, carpal tunnel 🙃), or you could use VBA—here’s how!

Step 1) Press Alt + F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor

Step 2) Press Ctrl + G to open the Immediate Window

Step 3) Type ?Activeworkbook.Worksheets.Count

Step 4) Press Enter and boom—your answer appears instantly!

Say Hello to Serendipity Popcorn 🍿

Ever notice how popcorn never pops all at once? One kernel goes, then another, and suddenly—POP! POP! POP!—you’ve got a full bag. This is exactly how ideas spread.

Award-winning author and podcaster Jenny Blake calls this serendipity popcorn—when you release small experiments and projects into the world without knowing which ones will pop off (pun intended).

My experience with serendipity popcorn? When I built an Excel dashboard at my old 9-5 to save time on data entry. I showed the dashboard to one colleague. They shared it with another. The whole office started using it. Then leadership noticed.

Before I knew it, I was being flown out to different offices to teach Excel seminars. That was just the beginning: These mini-workshops gave me the idea and confidence to launch Miss Excel!

Me teaching Excel seminars at my old 9-5!

I could never have predicted how that one small kernel would lead to an entirely new career path. But that’s the beauty of serendipity popcorn—you never know where an idea might take you.

Maybe your kernel is sharing your Excel skills on social media or showing your manager the spreadsheet you’ve been working on. Whatever it is, keep throwing your ideas out there! The more you do, the better your chances of sparking a chain reaction.

What kernel will you put out there today? 🍿

  • Are you sharing your screen in PowerPoint the right way? 💭

  • The three steps to manifest the perfect day. ✨

  • The easy way to see your flagged emails in Outlook.

  • Long day ahead? This groovy playlist will energize you. 💃

  • A finance pro with 15 years of experience shares their favorite Excel shortcuts. 😮

One of the best things I’ve done this year? Created a “Great Things Are Always Happening to Me” list on my phone. Whenever something good happens—snagging the last seat at a coffee shop, getting a package delivered early, catching all the green lights on my commute—I write it down.

It’s a simple habit that trains your brain to notice the everyday positivity around you. ✨ Try it out!

Stay Exceling,

Kat

P.S. A university admissions office never sent acceptance letters to 2,000 rejected applicants. But messing up an election and losing $6 billion? Those both happened!
