Save the Intern in 2 Minutes 🆘

Imagine you’re at the office when you peer over the intern’s shoulder and see them doing…this: 👇

Oh boy. Let’s show them how to automatically number rows, shall we? Here’s how it’s done:

Step 1) In your desired cell, type 1

Step 2) With the cell still selected, press Alt + H, F, I, S

Excel Tip: đŸ’ĄALT + H, F, I, S is the shortcut for the Fill Series dialogue box. It lets you create a series of numbers, dates, and other patterns in a selected range!

Step 3) Select columns

Step 4) Put your Stop Value at 20

Hit Ok and you’re done! The intern can finally relax (and so can you 😉).

One Question to Unlock Better Conversations 🔐

A few years ago, my friend (let’s call her Jen!) had a big interview. Everything was smooth sailing until the hiring manager said, “We’re looking for an innovative thinker.”

Jen almost launched into a rehearsed pitch about leading creative campaigns in her past role—surely that was proof she was innovative, right? But instead, she asked this:

“What do you mean by 'innovative thinker?’”

The hiring manager’s answer surprised her. “Someone who can analyze how we handle client onboarding and find creative ways to cut the process from months to weeks.”

Whoa. This was very different from Jen’s assumption that “an innovative thinker is someone who spearheads creative projects.”

By asking for clarity, Jen pinpointed exactly what the hiring manager needed and tailored her response. (Spoiler: she got the job! 🥳)

“What do you mean by [word]?” is a powerful question. It avoids misunderstandings, helps the other person clarify their thoughts, and sets you up to respond with razor-sharp precision.

Now, I use it all the time:

  • When a client says they want to “stand out,” I ask: “Do you mean daring and bold…or just different from your competitors?”

  • When a manager mentions “leadership skills,” I ask: “Do you mean managing teams, projects, or something else?”

The best conversations happen when you cut through assumptions and get to the heart of what matters. And it all starts with being brave enough to ask one simple question: “What do you mean?” ✨

  • This one question will immediately get you into a gratitude mindset.

  • Keep mixing up the Alt + H + O + I and ALT + H + O + A shortcut? This mnemonic will help you remember which is which. 📝

Thanks for being here! If you had told me three years ago that my job would involve dressing up as Wicked đŸ§™ characters to create Excel content, I would never have believed you. But a few days ago, that’s exactly what I did—and it might just be my favorite Reel yet!

Stay Exceling,
