I had a friend (let’s call him Tim!) who used to break out in a cold sweat every three months. Not because of taxes or performance reviews, but because of this one email from his boss:

“Hey, can you sort this quarter's employee sales into performance rankings by EOD? Thanks!”

Cue Tim spending over an hour categorizing 17 sales reps by hand. 🫠

Then I showed Tim an XLOOKUP formula that automatically categorizes data. Now, he actually looks forward to these quarterly requests because he knows he’ll be done before his coffee gets cold. ☕

Here’s the formula:

Step 1) Type =XLOOKUP

Step 2) Select the lookup value and the sales threshold

Step 3) Enter the sales ranking

Step 4) Enter the highest ranking

Step 5) Enter 1 for “Exact Match” or the next larger item. Close your formula and you’re good to go. Our final formula is =XLOOKUP(B2:B17,F12:F14,E12:E14,E14,1)

Tim’s problem? Solved. His time? Saved. As for his job? Let’s just say Tim was promoted six months later. 😉

The 3 Job Interview Qs Most People Get Wrong 🙇

“I can’t believe I told them my biggest weakness was ‘being a perfectionist.’” 🤦

It was 2017, and I’d just stumbled out of an interview with a Very Cool Company.™ Unfortunately, I was so nervous that I blurted out the same answer everyone gives when asked about their shortcomings. That interview wasn’t my best, but it was a turning point.

I started paying attention to what interviewers really wanted to hear rather than what I thought they wanted to hear. Turns out there are three questions that we get wrong as interviewees:

  1. “What’s your biggest weakness?”

Most of us default to “perfectionism” (myself included 🫠), but in reality, interviewers want to see if you’re self-aware and have systems to keep your weaknesses in check.

For example: “I say ‘yes’ to extra projects even when I don’t have the bandwidth. To avoid that, I run new projects by my manager to make sure I’m not overloading myself.”

  1. “What’s your work experience?”

Don’t recite your entire work history! Instead, tailor your answer to how your experience could help solve their future challenges. With everything changing so fast, companies really want to know how you’ll adapt.

For example: “I managed customer service for three years. I’m looking to use that experience to train AI chatbots for a company that’s working on customer support tools.”

  1. “Why do you want this job?”

Instead of the go-to “I’m passionate about [insert industry here],” explain why you love solving the problem in that industry.

For example: “I love the puzzle of figuring out why customers aren’t converting. I could spend all day A/B testing and chatting with focus groups.”

What’s the interview question that trips you up the most? Reply and let me know! 💼
