These Two Functions are a Match in Data Cleaning Heaven šŸ‘¼šŸ¼

Itā€™s another day in the office when you glance over your new interns' shouldersā€”and see theyā€™re about to send this spreadsheet to your boss.

ā€œItā€™s going to take way too long to fix these manually,ā€ they explain. Because you want your intern to become your future co-worker, you show them this data-cleaning tip:

Step 1) In your desired cell, type =TRIM(PROPER(A2))

šŸ’” Excel Foundations:

The TRIM function removes all spaces from text except the spaces between words.

Example: ā€œHello    thereā€ āžœ ā€œHello thereā€

The PROPER function capitalizes the first letter of each word.

Example: ā€œHeLLO tHeReā€ āžœ ā€œHello Thereā€

Step 2) Drag down and youā€™re good to go! (and the intern lives to see another day šŸ˜…)

Find Success Through Subtraction

When I was in high school, I enrolled in this one extracurricular that seemed great on paper but quickly overwhelmed me. Juggling that activity alongside my classes and part-time job was stressful (to put it lightly). šŸ«

To pull it off, I downloaded the latest productivity software, bought one of those fancy bullet-journals, and even learned how to color-code my calendar.

Me trying to convince myself I could handle it all šŸ˜…

But no matter how organized I tried to be, I was still scrambled and stressed. Then I asked myself: ā€œWhat if instead of adding things to ā€˜fixā€™ the problem, I removed the problem?ā€

I opted out of the extracurricular activity. And you know what happened? I had more time and energy to focus on my classes, job, and relationshipsā€”all the things most important to me.

Sometimes, the answer to our dissatisfaction lies in subtracting whatā€™s not serving us instead of adding more and more stuff.

For example, if youā€™reā€¦

  • šŸ’¼ Unhappy at your job āžœ Instead of going after bigger and better projects, consider leaving your current field to find something thatā€™s a better fit.

  • šŸ¤³ Addicted to social media āžœ Instead of putting your phone on grayscale and purchasing social-media blocking apps, delete the apps from your phone.

  • šŸ„± Tired 24/7 āžœ Instead of downing coffee and energy drinks, cut out the late-night Netflix sessions.

This is easier said than done. For starters, itā€™s difficult to let go of things once theyā€™re in our possession (this is known as the endowment effect!). Second, adding ā€œsolutionsā€ is simpler than changing our behavior and die-hard habits.

But getting rid of things that donā€™t serve us will always have outsized returns. And in most cases? Less is definitely more. šŸ˜Š

  • Three foolproof ways to hide zeros in your spreadsheets.

Thanks for being here! Iā€™m on cloud nine heading into this weekend after going to Joe Dispenzaā€™s meditation retreat last week! I spent 35 hours meditating (which is wildā€”meditation used to be so tough for me!). Have a good one!
