Check Me Off Out ✔️

If you’re like me, you probably keep all of your to-do lists, project trackers, and inventory management spreadsheets in Excel (because honestly, what can’t Excel do?).

But here’s the game changer you might be missing: checkboxes.

Checkboxes aren’t just great for organization: They’re proven to boost our productivity! Each time you cross something off, your brain releases dopamine, creating a natural reward system that motivates you to keep going. The result is a productivity flywheel—the more you cross off, the more motivated you become. 🏃

Here’s how to set them up:

Step 1) Right click on your ribbon and select Customize the Ribbon…

Step 2) Go to the Developer box. Click to activate it. Navigate to Ok to add it to your tab. If you don’t see the tab on your ribbon, try exiting the file and re-opening it!

Step 3) Click the Developer tab. Go to Insert and then select the checkbox icon

Step 4) Click and drag the box across your desired cell. Then delete the text and copy it down!

This is a simple way to add checkboxes in Excel, but there’s an even quicker shortcut. I explain it in 15 seconds right here! ✨

The Unexpected Way to Be More Likable 🙇

Ever wondered what really made the popular kids popular in high school? It wasn’t just their Hollister polos.

Dr. Mitch Prinstein, a psychology and neuroscience professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, surveyed thousands of students at different ages and schools to answer that very question.

Across every popular kid, one variable stayed consistent…and it wasn’t attractiveness, athleticism, or IQ. Can you guess what it was? 👀

They liked a lot of people. When the survey asked students “Who do you like?” the most popular teens consistently provided the longest lists of classmates. It turns out the more people you like, the more people like you back.

While the cafeteria days are over, this insight still matters, especially in your career. Likable people more commonly get promoted, make more money, and even live longer. But how do you genuinely like more people rather than just feigning interest?

Two ways to expand your liked list:

  • Adopt a learner’s mindset: Go into every conversation believing the other person has something to teach you. Ask yourself: “What might I learn from this person that I couldn’t learn elsewhere?”

  • Play belief detective: Be curious about how someone’s views were shaped. Did they come from another industry? Grow up in a different country? Understanding someone’s backstory = deeper empathy and appreciation.

What I love most about this research? It’s that popularity isn’t about being the “most interesting” person in the room. It’s about being the most interested in others. 🙇

Last week, we hit a pinch-me milestone: The Workbook officially passed 400,000 active subscribers! 🥲 Since July 2022, we’ve been sending this newsletter nearly every week and it’s been incredible to watch this community grow. From the bottom of my heart: Thank you for being part of it.

Stay Exceling,

Kat
