Many of us go about any goal—landing the dream job, building a meaningful relationship, growing a social media presence—the wrong way. 

Instead of asking how to become the type of person who naturally attracts success, we focus on what we can get from it. Here’s what I mean: 

• When I launched the Miss Excel TikTok in 2020, my first thought was, “How do I get followers?” 

• It’s a valid question, but it was all about me and what I could gain. 

Everything changed when I shifted to, “How do I become the type of creator worth following?” This question redirected me toward leveling up to serve people better. 

So your girl got to work. I brainstormed creative Excel content ideas. I learned TikTok editing so the videos were fun and intuitive. The result? I hit 100,000 views after a month. 

This shift applies to almost any goal. Say you’re after a data engineering job. Instead of asking, “How do I get hired?” go with, “How do I become the type of candidate worth hiring?” 

That could mean leveling up your Excel skills with a free Excel class (😉), connecting with the hiring manager on LinkedIn, or creating a personal project to show off your skills.

In short? It’s less about “getting” and more about “becoming.” Start each goal by giving, growing, and adding value—and in time, your goals will align with who you’ve become. ✨
