Whatā€™s the Date Again?Ā

Mean Girls GIF By Paramount Movies

If youā€™re using Excel, youā€™re inevitably going to be working with dates as a data point. So, letā€™s get really good at it so you can impress your coworkersā€”and maybe even land a date (šŸ„ba-dum-tss).Ā

How to keep a worksheet up-to-date:Ā

Letā€™s say you have a report for which youā€™d like to display the current dateā€”while making sure the date updates automatically each time you open the worksheet.Ā

Thatā€™s where the TODAY function slides in. The formula is super simple:Ā

=TODAY()

But youā€™ll encounter situations when you need to insert dates as a static unchangeable value. This is a fancy way of saying the date wonā€™t change down the line. There are a bazillion scenarios where you might need this, likeā€¦

šŸ¤ Writing down a coworkerā€™s hire date

šŸ’ø Listing the date of a purchase

šŸ“• Recording a project launch date

The easiest way to insert todayā€™s date (or time) as a static unchangeable value is to use an incredibly straightforward keyboard shortcut:Ā

Todayā€™s Date: Ctrl + ;

Current Time: Ā Ctrl + Shift + ;

Current Date and Time: Ctrl + ; Space, + Ctrl + Shift + ;

Looking to take your skills even further? In this 10-second video, I teach you how to use custom formatting so you can change a date's font color to highlight different entries.Ā

Happy dating! šŸ‘©ā€ā¤ļøā€šŸ’‹ā€šŸ‘Ø

Tell Me What You Want (What You ReallyĀ Really Want)Ā

giphy.com

Whenā€™s the last time you asked for what you really wanted?Ā

Whether itā€™s asking for a raise, admitting what youā€™d really like for dinner, or emailing a dream client, itā€™s important to go after what you want. As the saying goes, ā€œYou canā€™t dance if you donā€™t show up to the party.ā€ šŸ•ŗšŸ»

Back in 2016, I wanted to teach Excel. Realizing that nothing could be lost from asking, I pitched the idea to my managing director. A few months later and BAM! I was flying around the US leading Excel training for the company. Without that experience, I probably wouldnā€™t be writing to you as Miss Excel today.

But many of us donā€™t ask for what we want because weā€™re afraid of inconveniencing someone or facing rejection. The thing is, most people are happy to helpā€”itā€™s just a matter of crafting your question clearly.

Hereā€™s how to make a compelling ask:

šŸ¤Ā What. Crystallize what youā€™ll be talking about or asking for (duh).Ā

ā€œIā€™ve been working on an NFT project and need guidance on how to sell on OpenSea.ā€

ā“Ā Why. Why are you asking that specific person? Explain why theyā€™re the best fit to help.

ā€œSeeing as you spent two years at Coinbase, you have tons of valuable experience (super inspiring for a newbie like myself).ā€

ā°Ā When. List how long the question will take and suggest a date for your pitch.Ā

ā€œIā€™d like to schedule a 15-minute phone call on Thursday afternoon.ā€

When we roll all this up, it sounds pretty good:Ā

āŒ ā€œCan we chat?ā€Ā

āœ… "Iā€™ve been working on an NFT project. Iā€™d love to hear your perspective on a launch strategy since you spent the last two years at Coinbase, making you super knowledgeable (and inspiring!). Would you be open to a 15-minute chat next Thursday afternoon?ā€

Do you have any wins from when you asked for what you wanted? Iā€™d love to hear it!
